San Miguel Island Census Data from 1999-2000 Season
San Miguel Island had a total of 12,041 pups, 8,567 adult females, 1,2772 subadult and adult males, and 1 juvenile for a grand total of 21,886. Census was taken by Mark Lowry a biologist with the Southwest National Oceanographic Atmospheric Association (NOAA). He collected the data mid-way through the breeding season in the winter (this year the census was made on February 12, 2000). This data was obtained by Aerial photographic counts using large-format color photographs, which were taken at an altitude of 800 feet from a twin engine aircraft.
