THAT'S RIGHT! Elephant seal pups are also called black coats. They obtained this name because of the black coat they are born with. These coats molt (similar to a snake shedding its skin) as they wean on the beach. Prior to going into the ocean, their black coats will completely molt off and they are left with a smooth silver coat.
