Channel Islands Elephant Seal Policies

The northern channel islands, which includes San Miguel, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara make up the Channel Islands National Park (CINP). Four of the five islands within the park are northern elephant seal rookeries. Since these (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara) are part of a national park, they have the ability to enforce stricter regulations than Piedras Blancas, which is not a state or national park. CINP enforces all federal laws (marine mammal protection act and elephant seal closure law) that pertain to elephant seals.

Access to San Miguel and Santa Cruz island is available but limited. These limitations occur on this Island due to the fragile terrestrial and marine resources. Other parts of this Island are accessible with a free permit. These permits allow private boaters to hike beyond the ranger station. People may only land on the western portion of Santa Cruz Island. Permission must be granted by the Nature Conservancy prior to landing on the island.

There are no entrance fees to visit the park and no campground fees for camping in the National Park Service operated campground. Only a reservation fee of $2.50 per campsite per night is necessary.

San Nicolas Island, is a channel island that is not part of CINP. Northern elephant seals breed here as well. People are not allowed on this island because it is a navy base.
